I have decided that this piece would
benefit from having an external frame, which stretches the canvas in the
same way that animal skins are stretched out for drying. This will
increase the sense of abjection within the picture, and also provides a
means by which addictional objects can be displayed around the edges of
the painting, [possibly the small wound/pustule test canvases, all of
which will add to the narrative of the piece.
An external frame will be a useful means of overcoming the issues I face with moving from cardboard to canvas as ground for my work. Distressed and dirty cardboard, which I used to ground my earlier work, provided an immediate sense of dejection and desolation to the work, which I want to continue as a theme in my present work. Using alternatives to the standard canvas stretcher for my paintings will be a means of achieving this, and for this work, an external frame will be the most suitable.
