Its a real treat to find the Whitechapel Gallery hosting a retrospective of Sarah Lucas' work. Her exploration of the human body, sexuality, and gender roles in post-industrial society, and her continual transgression of taboos in expressing these themes in her work are really informative for the kind of work that I am trying to produce.
Sarah Lucas' work focuses largely upon the human body, its visceral and maleable nature, and especially upon feminine sexuality. Strange flesh coloured forms, produced from nylon tights stuffed with kapok, twist around upon each other like entrails, while everyday household objects are rearanged to reflect female genitalia in a way which provokes questions about female sexuality, and how this is demeaned and exploited through marketing in capitalist society.
Sarah Lucas' work is an extremely bold, often shocking, exploration of the human body and human sexuality. It demands that we re-examine commonly held belief about the role of women in society, challenging the capitalist zeitgeist which attempts to co-opt the feminine as a marketing tool, instead asking that we see women as holistic beings, fully developed and free from the tyranny of marketing which constantly seeks to demean women, and co-opt sex as a means of selling products.
